HCL

Stearic Acid

It occurs in many animal and vegetable fats and oils, but it is more common in animal fat than vegetable fat. The important exceptions are cocoa butter and shea butter whose fatty acids consist of 28–45% stearic acid. It can also be obtained from the hydrogenation of some unsaturated vegetable oils.

uses :-

stearic acid is useful as an ingredient in making candles, plastics, dietary supplements, oil pastels and cosmetics, and for softening rubber. It is used to harden soaps, particularly those made with vegetable oil. Stearic acid is used in aerosol shaving cream products.

esters of stearic acid with ethylene glycol, glycol stearate and glycol distearate, are used to produce a pearly effect in shampoos, soaps, and other cosmetic products. They are added to the product in molten form and allowed to crystallize under controlled conditions.

in fireworks, stearic acid is often used to coat metal powders such as aluminium and iron. This prevents oxidation, allowing compositions to be stored for a longer period of time.

it is used along with simple sugar or corn syrup as a hardener in candies.

Boiling Point : 338 Deg C
Specific Gravity (98%) : 1.84
Miscibility : Miscible in all
Proportions
with water
Tiv : 0.2ppm It is colourless, oily dense liquid without any odour. It reacts vigorously with revolution of heat. The concentrated acid is powerful oxidizing agent. When hot, it dissolves most metals and reacts vigorously with nitrates, carbides. It reacts with most organic compounds

HEALTH HAZARDS:

Poisonous if inhaled or swallowed. Contact causes. Severe burns to skin any eyes.

EXPLOSION:

Some of the materials may burn but none of them ignites readily. It may ignite other combustible materials like wood, paper, oil, etc., Violent reaction with water.

EMEREGENCY ACTION

Keep unnecessary people away. Isolate hazard area and deny entry. Stay upwind, out of low areas, and ventilate closed spaces before entering. Self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing which is specifically recommended by the shipper of producer may be worn but they do not provide thermal protection unless sit is stated by the clothing manufacturer. Structural firefighter?s protective clothing is not effective with these materials. Evaculate the leak or spill are immediately for at least 50feet in all directions. If water pollution occurs, notify the appropriate authorities.

FIRE

Do not get water inside container. Small fires: Dry chemical C2 or Halon. Large Fires: Flood fire area with water from distance. Do not get solid Stream or water on spilled material. Move container from fire area if you can do it without risk. Cool containers that area exoposed to flames with water from the side until well after fire is out. Stay away from ends of tanks.

SPILL OR LEAK

Do not touch spilled material: stop leak if you can do it without risk.. Do not get water inside container. Use water spray to reduce vapor, do not let water directly on leak or spill area. Keep combustibles (wood, paper, oil, etc) away from spilled material. Spills: for later disposal do not apply water unless directed to do so. Cleanup only under supervision of an export.

FIRST AID

Over victim to fresh air and call emergency medical care; if not breathing give artificial respiration; if breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes at the site. Speed up of the removal of material from the skin which is extremely important. In case of contact with the material, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes. Keep victim quiet and maintain normal body temperature.

INITIAL ISOLATION & EVACUATION DISTANCES:

For a spill or leak from drum or small container ( or small leak from tank):isolate in all directions a 300 feet. For a large spill from tank (or from many containers or drums):first isolate in all directions 600 feet; then, evaculate in downwind directions 1.5 miles wide and 3.o+ miles 1o
