FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes
Rinse eyes with a flow of water for at least 15 minutes holding eyelids apart to ensure complete irrigation of all eye and lid tissues. Washing eyes within several seconds of exposure is essential to achieve maximum effectiveness. Seek medical advise immediately.
Skin
Rinse contaminated areas with water as soon as possible. Remove contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash contaminated areas with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical advise immediately.
Inhalation
Move to fresh air. If not possible try to provide fresh air by ventilation. If breathing is difficult, have a trained person administer oxygen. If respiration or pulse has stopped, administer Basic Life Support and call for emergency services immediately.
Ingestion
If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Give large quantities of water. (If possible, give several glasses of milk.) If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep airway clear and give more water or milk. Seek medical advise immediately.

SPECIFICATION-CAUSTIC SODA FLAKES
White deliquescent solid in flakes form
Sodium hydroxide as NaOH % by mass (Min) : 99.50
Sodium Carbonate as Na2CO3 % by mass. (Max) : 0.40
Chloride as NaCl % by mass (Max) : 0.10
Iron as Fe ppm by mass (Max) : 20
Reagents Procedure
1 N HCl Add 106 ml of 30% distilled/AR grade acid to 894 ml of distilled
Water. Mix well and keep the solution for some time. Mix again and
Standardize after 15 minutes.
Standardization:
By means of weighing bottle transfer 1.8 to 2.2 gram of oven dried AR grade Na2CO3 in 250 ml clean glass beaker. Add 50 ml of freshly boiled and cold distilled water and dissolve the material by means of glass rod. Titrate this against 1 N HCl to be standardized using ‘A’ grade burette and 5 drops of methyl orange indicator
Colour changes from yellow to light red. note down the burette reading (BR)
Calculation:
99.9 x wt of soda ash
Normality = ————————————-
BR x 5.3
0.1N.HCl : Pipette out 50 ml of 1 N Hcl into 500 ml of columerised flask and dilute to 500 ml
Phenolphthalein : Dissolve 0.1 gram of phenolphthalein in 60 ml of ethyl alcohol. Make up the volume to 100 ml with distilled water Methyle Orange: Dissolve 0.1 gram of methyle orange in 100ml of distilled water
